Grand Chenier Branch

Branch History

In 2005 the former Jim Bonsall Grocery Store was purchased and remodeling began for what was to become the Grand Chenier Library. Unfortunately, before the remodeling was finished, Hurricane Rita made landfall on September 24th, 2005. Things looked grim for the small community library, but as the citizens of Cameron Parish know well, there is always hope. The library staff began using a bookmobile as a temporary library. Soon after, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation purchased and donated a fully furnished portable building. This same building has served Grand Chenier since, with the exception of being evacuated for Hurricane Ike in September of 2008. A new library will be built in 2011 across the street from the current site to help serve the citizens of lower Cameron Parish. The new building will have a small meeting room for community meetings and programs.
