Grand Lake

Branch History

Grand Lake Branch was opened on August 18, 2003. The staff served the Grand Lake Community with reading materials, fun and educational programs for children and adults, and computer services for two full years. On September 23, 2005, Hurricane Rita hit Cameron Parish hard. Grand Lake Branch was the only branch to survive the storm. The library employees worked out of the Grand Lake Branch to set up bookmobiles to assist other parts of the parish with library services. Things ran smoothly for a time until tragedy struck once again on September 13, 2008 when Hurricane Ike made landfall in Texas. Once again, Grand Lake Branch survived with minor damage and was up and running to provide the rest of Cameron Parish with their library services. Now that the local branches are all running on their own again Grand Lake Branch is able to focus on their community. Keep your eye on this library in the near future as a new building is in the works, located on the site of the old daycare on Gulf Highway in Grand Lake. While everyone hopes that no more hurricanes will come our way, we know that no matter how hard the recovery is, Grand Lake Branch will step up to the plate to provide library services until, like the marshes and cheniers, we rebuild ourselves and return to being a fixture of this unique community. We will maintain and promote Grand Lake Branch as a source of entertainment and knowledge in this unique and resilient sportsman’s paradise.
